Diane Damos, Ph. D. has been involved in pilot selection and training for over 40 years.  She received her doctorate in 1977 from the University of Illinois in aviation psychology. She was a professor of human factors for 19 years.  For 13 of these, she was on the faculty of the Institute of Safety and Systems Management at the University of Southern California. She is currently a professor in Aviation Human Factors at CQFA.  Dr. Damos is the president of Damos Aviation Services, Inc., a company specializing in pilot selection, which she founded in 1995.  Dr. Damos has conducted research on pilot selection for both the U.S. Air Force and the Navy.  She has worked as a consultant for several air carriers, training schools, and governments in the United States, Africa, the West Indies, Canada, and Asia. She has lectured and taught courses and seminars on pilot selection in Taiwan, South Africa, Spain, and Canada as well as in the United States.


Dr. Mark Rose 

Mark Rose  is a Personnel Research Psychologist with the U.S. Air Force Personnel Center Headquarters (HQ AFPC). He received his Ph.D. in industrial-organizational psychology from the University of South Florida in 1997. His research focuses on pilot selection, personality and ability measurement, and research methods. Dr. Rose’s work has been instrumental in making enhancements to the U.S. Air Force’s procedures and methods for selecting candidates into manned and unmanned aircraft pilot training programs. His role involves occupational needs analysis, test development and validation, and serving as a technical advisor to Air Force leaders on pilot selection system implementation.

Pilot Interviewing Essentials

Pilot Interviewing Essentials  is an online course in pilot interviewing that teaches the participant how to prepare and conduct the captains’ (technical) interview. The course is appropriate for anyone directly involved in pilot interviewing including Human Resources personnel and management pilots.  No prior training in human resources or personnel management is needed.

By the end of the course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify which knowledge, skills, abilities, and traits should be assessed in the interview

  2. Develop past behavior, situational, and technical interview questions and their probes

  3. Use behavioral anchors for scoring

  4. Produce appropriate interview notes and rating scores

  5. Determine the number and types of questions and probes to be included in the interview

The course consists of 8 modules.  The information is presented using slides with voice-overs. The course material takes an average of 3.5 hours to complete.  No outside reading is required, and no additional materials have to be purchased. Pilot Interviewing Essentials is completely self-paced and is available 24/7.  Participants may begin the course anytime after it is purchased and have 90 days to complete the course from the time they begin they begin the first module. 

At the end of the course, there is a comprehensive evaluation. After the participant completes the evaluation, he/she will be issued a Certificate of Achievement by Quebec Center for Aviation Training(CQFA).
